10 Insights from "Steal Like An Artist" Book

It's been a long time since my last post on my blog. I didn't read some books then; I just took insight or some such thing from Instagram/linked-in posts or youtube videos. Today, I want to share Austin Kleon's book, Steal Like An Artist. By the time I read the title, I was like, what does this title mean? Then I wonder what is inside this book. In brief, Kleon shares what he learned while working as an artist. However, this book is for someone looking for creativity in their life or work, not just for an artist.

I will mark ten insights that are probably useful for us:

1. Steal Like an Artist

Steal everything that inspires us. Enjoy the films, photographs, dreams, books, music, etc. It should be noted that we could create something by learning from the figure that we like. Learn and pay attention to things, curious about something we would know, search all references, read, then apply. By that, our work becomes authentic. He also said learning is easy as long as we desire to learn. Do you agree with this?

2. We don't have to wait to find our identity to make a start.

Fake it 'till you make it. That sentence is also in Taylor Swift's song 'You're Your Own, Kid' hha. In fact, this dramaturg comes in William Shakespeare in his drama 'As You Like' 400 years ago. The sentence means to pretend that we have achieved what we dreamt until we achieve it. So, we will act doing our dream job/something and should do whatever we crave.

3. Write a book that you think it's interesting.

If we are interested in something, it gave us encouraged in it. We could make the encouragement into something productive. The first step is to think of our favorite creations and role models. Then, get to know the weakness, something they didn't do, something we could improve. In brief, do something we want to complete that is inspired by our favorite things and role models.

4. Use your hand.

A computer/ laptop is suitable for editing our idea before publishing it but not ideal for looking for ideas. So, if possible, we could divide our workspace into manual and digital. We could make creations, for instance, writing ideas with colorful pens, sticking some Post-it, and everything in a manual workspace. On the other hand, we use a laptop in the digital workspace to implement and disseminate ideas.

5. Side hustles and hobbies are necessary.

Pick two to three something we into it, and keep up with it. Also, a hobby is a creative activity for ourselves and makes us feel safe from being overwhelmed by work. We could do our hobby, and maybe an idea will pop up in our head at that time.

6. Do it well and share it.

The first step is to be interested in something. The second is to make others interested too.

7. Location does not matter.

Location doesn't matter doesn't mean choosing residence shouldn't be observed. We sometimes should go or live in different places for some time, living with people from diverse backgrounds. It needs adaptation so that it drives our brains to work harder. Living in a comfortable zone for too long isn't a good way.

8. Be kind (the world is narrow).

The best way to eradicate adversaries? Being indifferent. The best way to make friends? Say good things and behave well.

9. Being boring because that's the way we complete the work.

Creating good work and building an excellent career is an accumulation of small efforts we do daily. It might be boring. But that's the way it is. To make it easier, we could make a calendar showing our effort for a year. Checklist every time we did our to-do list. It gave us satisfaction when we checklist it. Our target is to ascertain whether the to-do list box is filled up.

10. Creativity means limitation.

In the creative field, limitation means freedom. "Believing that you have a lot of time, money, all the colors on the palette, or whatever you want kills creativity" (Jack White).

And that's all from me! I hope this will help you and me (absolutely).
